Heroin detection using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) is a time-consuming process for forensics due to the derivatization process of the sample. To reduce analysis time, heroin and its metabolites in biological assays can be detected with liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) coupled with soft ionization processes such as electrospray ionization and sonic spray ionization. Direct analysis in real time (DART) is a method also used but it is independent of LC-MS systems.
