Coal remains one of the most common energy sources in the United States, but the combustion process produces pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, which contribute to smog. Though current pollution abatement technology significantly reduces compounds released into the atmosphere, these techniques can be improved. This research examines nitrogen oxide abatement in coal-fired power plants to find efficient, cost-effective, and safe techniques that protect the health of the environment and citizens.
