Cytochrome c is an electron transport protein that is essential to metabolism for most organisms from bacteria to humans. Many of the amino acid residues that form cytochrome c are evolutionarily conserved across broad clades of species and are vital to the functions of this protein. Understanding the functional role of these residues could allow us to better predict the health effects of mutations or design proteins for industrial use with precise redox potentials and environmental tolerances.
