While it is understood that random mutations lead to the evolution of a species, the effects of epigenetic mutations have only begun to be explored in the last several years. Epigenetics, meaning above the gene, can control how a gene expresses itself and can change within the lifetime of an individual. This introduces the Neo-Lamarckian theory of evolution, proposing the idea that changes in a parent during their life can be inherited, changing our previous understanding of evolution.
