This capstone experience explores the effect of curcumin (the active constituent in the spice Turmeric) on the oxidative stress response of adult wild-type Drosophila melanogaster as measured by survival on an H2O2 challenge. Oxidative stress is the cause of a vast amount of age-related human diseases, and the capstone addresses why Drosophila makes a great model organism. We will dive into sex differences and the crucial role of antioxidants in medicine.
