Between the War of 1813 and the Civil War, the U.S. Army was by design very small and promotion was based only on the retirement of senior officers. This is partly why Brevet ranks earned in the Mexican War were so valuable, as they came with pay raises. This presentation covers the 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoon Regiments, which were designed to be mobile infantry covering the vast American West.
